Brush Creek

Brush Creek Road Trip I(2016)
This was a part of the Brush Creek tour and the song was Water No Get Enemy by Fela Kuti. This is a montage of the 'adventure' we took. We mostly drove since the creek was inaccessible in Kansas.

Brush Creek Road Trip II(2016)
This was a part of the Brush Creek tour and the song was Water No Get Enemy by Fela Kuti. This is a montage of the 'adventure' we took. We mostly drove since the creek was inaccessible in Kansas. This version is longer and has more shots of the creek and is more cohesive.

Sublime Water(2016)
To me this invokes the sublime because it shows the rushing water of the creek, but also we deal with the pollution of the city with the pizza box from Sarpino's. But with the sound, there's no indication, from the running water, that this isn't normal.

Question: How can we convince people that aesthetics of normal natural nature will help the environment more than the look of controlled manicured nature?

Brush Creek Road Trip V2(2016)
This was a part of the Brush Creek tour and the song was 11-11 by Local Natives. This is a montage of the 'adventure' we took. We mostly drove since the creek was inaccessible in Kansas, though I added more footage from the tour we were given. After a critique, I made my pattern of still/movement/still/repeat more obvious while still keeping my videos in chronological/geographical order. Also a part of the edit to change the mood is a black and white filter to add more of a somber feeling and the music helps exude it.

Sunny // Hippie Sabotage(2016)
I used the original edit of the Brush Creek Road Trip with the subtracted footage of my brother that was suggested. I did not however use the footage used in the somber re-edit. For the remix, I wanted to do something different I've not really done before with the hazy dream like overlays of the videos on top of each other. Along with that, I changed the speed of the video to make it longer as time passes: the first time going super fast, the next going at regular speed and the last going at half speed. I thought it might be too much at first with the pattern getting slower and slower, but since the video is calm, it's not overwhelming. The song is Sunny by Hippie Sabotage. I chose it because it was long enough and also fit the hazy feeling.

Brushcreekasqatsi(2016)
This video is supposed to invoke the sublime feelings that the creek can possess through motion. I filmed in various places on a sunny afternoon, trying to get as much motion as I could from not just the creek by the environment around. It was a little bit surprising to see how quickly the water looked like it was going though. The water in some of the shots remind of Claude Monet's Le Bassin Aux Nymphéas in motion. Going off of that, most of my influence for this comes from impressionist work and the painterly style. I chose "In Hushed Whispers" from the Dragon Age: Inquisition Soundtrack because I thought the cello helps guide the voice of the creek and helps the creek talk in a way.

This has less of the tilted tree and the title is spelled correctly. The music is also louder.

Final Intent:
For the final, I'll be using the interview with Bob and his talk about the storm drains and concrete with Penderghast and growing up in Kansas City. For this, I was thinking about maybe rerecording his interview so that way I wouldn't have to worry about the wind getting too loud and popping in the audio and our interruptions. For the visuals, I don't have any real inspirations at the moment. Before, I played with the idea of using a person to stand in as Bob and have little vignettes come up like in the animation It's Such a Beautiful Day, but his interview doesn't lend its hand to that, and I feel like going straight documentary style will work for this more. So I guess my inspiration would be an old classmate who made a few documentaries before, Andrew Lovgren and going with his style of making video visually stimulating and interesting.

Bob's Take on Brush Creek(2016)
Bob, a lawyer, briefly talks about what he knows about the local creek. It's still my brother's audio with script two because I didn't see my dad at all this weekend. The concrete was overflowed with rain water, I didn't think it was safe to climb down because of toxins and pollutants.

Bob's Take on Brush Creek II(2016)
Bob's a lawyer who knows a bit about the creek. I found him in Theis Park hitting some golf balls and had him talk a bit. The video highlights the drainage system, the pollution in the stream, and also the under use of the parks around in general. Voice Over: Dorian DeBose (because of the wind and stuff from the real interview)
